local school

Being uncomfortable is something I have gotten more comfortable with over the last 10+ years of being a full time missionary. But that doesn't necessarily make the uncomfortable things easy.

The local government school next to the community center was looking for some native english speakers to teach at the school. I was encouraged to volunteer. Though I was hesitant at first, I decided to do it. I’m so glad I did!

I teach the 7th and 8th graders once a week. There are about 30 students in each class. They range from 13-17 years old. Some are moderately fluent in english and others don't know the alphabet. Some of them are interested in learning and others have no desire to be in the class. For most students english is their 3rd language.

By teaching at the school I, and my teammates, are building relationships with the students, the faculty, the district officials, and the community. Despite the opposition to Christians and Christianity in this village we are invited and welcomed into the school. That is a huge blessing!

My hope is that more of the students from the school will attend the community center. A place where they can practice their english, learn life skills, and hear the Good News of Jesus.
